an application to enable effective governance and management
Our Rule is an application to enable communities and institutions of any scale to have effective distributed governance and management without resorting to hierarchical models like representative democracy. It enables much more novel and richer ones like: holacracyHolacracy is a method of decentralized management and organizational governance, in which authority and decision-making are distributed throughout a holarchy of self-organizing teams rather than being vested in a management hierarchy, sociocracySociocracy (aka dynamic governance) is a system of governance which seeks to achieve solutions that create harmonious social environments as well as productive organizations and businesses. It is distinguished by the use of consent rather than majority voting in decision-making, and decision-making after discussion by people who know each other, and liquid democracyLiquid democracy (aka delegative democracy) is a form of majoritarian democracy that lies between direct and representative democracy - so participants have the option of vesting voting power in delegates rather than voting directly themselves whenever they need to.
It aims to make it straightforward for communities to start governing themselves and their institutions much more effectively than it's currently possible.
This application is free and open-source, and is made by Our Movement — itself a movement aiming to promote radical social change by catalyzing the emergence of resilient communities.
We have come a long way ever since the neolithic revolution, about 12,000 years ago or so. Our ancestors are known to have been fiercly egalitarianfrom The Guardian: Study shows that modern hunter-gatherer tribes operate on egalitarian basis, suggesting inequality was an aberration that came with the advent of agriculture by governing peer-to-peer, which produced very strong social bonds and enabled us to survive and thrive for the past 3.2 million years. All that came to an abrupt end with the dawn of agriculture simply because our brain's capacity to govern that way works for very small number of individuals, therefore bands of people usually comprised of 30-50 individuals (up to 150 in related bandssee Dunbar's number). Unable to scale peer-to-peer governance as more and more people got cramped into villages and cities because of resource and labor concentration, hierarchy became a necessity — thus usurpation of power and inequality ensued and worsened, more or less ever since.
Nowadays most societies govern themselves based on centuries old model called representative democracy in which the people cast a vote once in every few years or so to elect their representative in legislative and government, and can only keep the fingers crossed and hope for the best outcome. As suspected, this practice hardly ever represents the will and the interest of the vast majority of the constituentsfrom Upworthy: 20 years of data reveals that Congress doesn't care what you think; for example they have no say over how to fund the public budgetwho should be paying the largest share, those that are making the most or those that barely make ends meet? and how to spend it once fundedshould we invest more in healthcare, education, eradicating poverty, clean energy sources, scientific research over nationalizing bankrupt banks, subsidizing pipelines for fossil fuel corporations, expanding the military? — hence majority end up funding it and only a tiny minoritythe ruling class really benefit from its spending.
Our Rule is a free and open-source application that attempts to increase collective intelligence of humans by enabling them to coordinate, sense-make and decide effectively on a very large scale (be it a community, enterprise, institution, neighbourhood, municipality, region, nation-state, all the way to include the whole of humanity); and all of that in peer-to-peer fashion — much like our ancestors did in localized and primitive way.
It enables novel and rich distributed governing models like: holacracy, sociocracy, and liquid democracy. Coupled with project management and accounting modules, will enable much more resilient communities.
Governance should really be as simple as pulling your smart device, opening up your favorite social media app, checking the news feed and engaging with the content that interests you.
The application is free of charge with no fees to be paid to anyone, and its source code is publicly available for independent inspection at any time. Each project is an independent holochain, and all the data generated is: transparent, verifiable in real-time and solely exits in devices of members of the respective community — which further instills trust among the participants.
It is made on the open by a community of people from around the world, who have no vested interest on the project itself.
This software is free and open-source, and its source code is licensed under Peer Production License (PPL).check Peer Production License for more information
The application is in the ideation stage and will be built using HolochainHolochain is a DLT framework for writing fully distributed peer-to-peer applications. It is open-source and is made by Metacurrency Project for data storage and integrity and QMLQML is a declarative language designed specifically for composing efficient App User Interfaces. It is open-source and is made by Qt Project for the User Interface (UI). It will be accessed most commonly through web browsers but there will also be native apps for major Operating Systems. The application will be fully distributed and run among its peers.
